Lafarge New Cement Mill Ground Investigation

Lafarge-Uganda (Hima Cement Ltd) proposed to install a new cement production facility in Tororo, Uganda at a site situated approximately 8 km from the town centre along Tororo-Mbale road in Tororo district. Ecotech Ltd were appointed consultant to provide engineering consultancy for the project to assess the availability of groundwater hydraulic and geotechnical investigation in the area, and the possibility of extracting it for use at the facility. The client is interested in developing groundwater for use in both the industry and human consumption.

Groundwater is an important natural resource that provides a secure and highly reliable source of water for rural and urban communities, industry and the environment. Our approach focused on the client’s need to commence redevelopment of the new cement production facility site. The ground investigation was required to determine geological and geotechnical information including design parameters for the proposed structure foundations and was generally carried out in accordance with BS 5930:1999.

Ecotech’s responsibility under this contract is interpretation of ground conditions encountered during the ground investigation to aid in designing of the proposed underground structures/foundations. The information provided is however expected to be sufficient for a competent designer to undertake design of all relevant parts of the structures. We also carried out an environmental appraisal and risk assessment; groundwater hydraulic and sedimentation modeling for the overall works.

Our technical team presented the scientific data in a context that could be readily understood by the local council and the Environment Protection Authority (EPA). Our role as technical advisor to the site owner involved assisting the client with both technical data and information gathering, while also negotiating on their behalf within the planning approval process and involvement of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
